| This month, we’re talking about income protection in support of the IPTF’s Income Protection Action Week (IPAW) next week. |
| We’ll look at some key statistics to help you start meaningful conversations with your clients about the benefits of this important cover. |
| Did you know? |
- In Q1 2025, an estimated 2.78 million people weren’t working because they were on long-term sickness leave in the UK1
- Statutory Sick Pay (SSP) is just £118.75 a week if someone is too ill to work for up to 28 weeks2
- If a person is self-employed, they won’t get SSP and would need to apply for benefits
- 39% of people would struggle to cover living expenses for more than a month if only relying on their savings3.
| How income protection can help |
| Income protection can give your clients peace of mind by helping them with the bills and maintaining their lifestyle if illness strikes. Industry-wide, income protection sales are on the rise and it’s already helping lots of people: |
- £204 million in individual income protection claims were paid in 20244
- That’s a 16% increase in total payouts from the previous year4
- As well as a payout, income protection can often give access to valuable additional support services including GP 24/7 and mental health and wellbeing consultations.

| The Dynamic Duo |
| At Guardian, we call the combination of income protection and life cover, The Dynamic Duo. You can combine Income Protection with either our premier Life Protection or Life Essentials as part of our Protection Menu. There’s a choice between full-term or 2-year term payment periods for Income Protection, so you can build a policy that fits your clients’ needs and budgets. You can also add optional Children’s Critical Illness Protection for clients with kids. |

| Young people need protection too – we just need to talk about it differently |
| With Laura Mitchell, Marketing Manager |
| How do you bring up protection with young people? According to Laura, it’s about helping them see how it fits with the life they’re building. That means less chat about dependents and mortgages, but more about lifestyle – something that points directly to income protection recommendations. |
