| January is the perfect time to re-engage with clients when everybody is in planning mode. Here are some ideas to start your conversation: |
| 1. Do they need help with budget planning? |
| Post Christmas, budgets can be tight. While some clients may be tempted to cancel their protection insurance, you can help them understand why it’s not a good short-term move. If they cancel now, then want to take it out again in the future, it can often cost them more. |
| 2. Do they need more cover? |
| Do your clients need to add cover, or another type of cover, that wasn’t a priority first time around? Sometimes people don’t fully understand the risks they face, but that’s where your expertise comes in. After all, ‘protecting against foreseeable harm’ is part of Consumer Duty. |
| 3. Has anything changed their end? |
| The New Year is a time of reflection on what’s happened in the last 12 months and the year ahead. Many will have experienced life changes, and these may mean they need to update their protection. Here are some suggestions to help you start the review with your clients: |

Things you can review

Changed job |
Do they need to change their Income Protection? |
Moved house |
Can they increase their cover amount with our Guaranteed Increase Option? |
Off work due to an illness or injury |
Can the Premium Waiver that’s included in their Guardian policy help? |
Had a child |
Do they need Children’s Critical Illness Protection? |
Lifestyle changed |
Can they reduce their monthly premium with our Lifestyle Promise? |
Relationship changed |
Do they need to change the beneficiaries of their life cover in Payout Planner? |
| Even if there’s no news at their end, checking in now is a great way to remind them of their policy and its benefits. It also puts the value of your advice firmly front of mind. |

| Tip of the month |
| With Matt Chapman, The Protection Coach |
| Each month we’ll bring you some tips from some tip-top advisers. For January, Matt Chapman reveals how he sets up for success for the year ahead: |
| “Providing ongoing service and avoiding the unnecessary cancellation of essential protection products is equally as important as writing new business. Introduce regular touch-points with customers throughout 2025 to ensure that you remain in their consciousness and so they never forget why their plans have been set up. Annual reviews can help you to identify any gaps in coverage and any new or alternative protection needs. Not only will this help to keep customers engaged, but also help ensure you remain Consumer Duty compliant.” |
