| This month we’re talking romance – well, as romantic as it gets for protection and cover for couples. Here are a few things to think about to make sure your clients love your advice. |
| 1. We challenge you to ‘dual’ |
| There’s a big debate right now about the best way to cover couples. Do you opt for a joint life policy or 2 single life policies? At Guardian we’re very fond of the latter. In fact, we’re so keen, we only do it this way and we call it our dual life approach. |
| 2. Looking after unmarried couples |
| If your clients haven’t tied the knot, there’s something else to consider. If they’re not married, they’re not legally each other’s ‘next of kin’ so there can be complications at probate. This is easy to solve with beneficiary nomination, as this contractually directs the payout to the right person. At Guardian we call this Payout Planner. Just make sure you select it when you apply. |
| 3. Help partners disclose discreetly |
| When collecting medical information from couples, stay mindful of the pitfalls of non-disclosure. Not everyone wants their partner to hear intimate medical details from their past, so if they’re together when you complete the medical questionnaire, always give them both the option to ‘call you later if they’ve forgotten anything’. This gives them an easy way to disclose anything they need to privately. And with our dual life approach, if each partner gives us their own email address, they’ll have separate MyGuardian accounts. |

| Adviser tip of the month |
| With Alan Lakey, CIExpert |
| Each month we’ll bring you some tips from some tip-top advisers. This month, Alan Lakey shares his view on what you need to discuss when you’re advising couples: |
| “Only 19% of consumers prioritise mortgage debt repayment when making a claim. And only 11% of couples are aware that with joint life, a policy ends after the claim is paid. It’s important to dig deep into a couple’s shared priorities before assuming that they’ll be better off saving a few pounds with a joint policy rather than two single lives.” |

| That’s all for February. Who’d have thought we could find a Valentine’s Day hook for protection? We hope you’ve found it useful, and we look forward to seeing you next month. |
